Yep, in the snow.  But we had fun.

Science Fair 2015

When given the chance to participate in the school science fair, our eager learner excitedly accepted the challenge.  (Participation was voluntary.)  We researched project ideas online and she chose one about displacement.

Natalie submerged different objects into equal glasses of water and measured how much the water rose.  Hypothesis (she learned this word as well): The backgammon piece will make the water rise more because it's bigger than a marble.  She took all of her own experiment notes.

Then she made predictions about how many of each object it would take to overflow the glass. The answer - 30 backgammon pieces, 98 marbles.

We extended the experiment to include Legos - why not, and they float initially showing that even floating objects displace some water.

The Legos took up so much room in the glass that she filled it before it overflowed.





Her conclusion: The bigger and heavier an object is, the more water it displaces.  The size and weight both matter.

Proudly with her project at the fair last night.  In the car on the way she squealed, "I can't believe I'm going to the Science Fair!!"

She received 14 out of 15 possible points.

 And a blue ribbon!

She was excited about every phase of this process and conquered several new concepts eagerly: things like the scientific method, displacement, hypothesis, and conclusion.  We're super proud.  In her own words from her board, "I learned a bunch!"  She went to bed last night talking about what she could do for next year's project. :)

Dr. Seuss Week Dress Up

Natalie's school celebrated Read Across America Week this week with daily Dr. Seuss activities and coordinated dress up themes. 

Monday was a birthday party for Dr. Seuss and they wore their favorite party hats. Nat made hers. 

Tuesday was Dress Like The Lorax Day - wear a mustache. 

Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday - wear silly clothes. She chose a cat in a hat shirt, of sorts, and polka dot overload. 

Thursday was supposed to be pajama day (I Am Not Going to Get Up Today) but school was cancelled due to the snow storm. She cried. 

Today was Fox in Socks Day - wear crazy socks. Audrey got in on the fun too!
